The third in the series of four seminars (funds granted by the Office of the Committee for European Integration) dedicated to cultural, artistic, and intellectual relationships between Italy and East-Central Europe. The topic of the session is to trace tendencies and ideologies that appeared parallel in these two regions of Europe in XIX cent. and aimed at the change of the countries' and nations' political status: the tendencies to create ethnic countries in the East-Central Europe through destroying bigger structures and - on the other hand - the tendencies to unify Italy and controversial creation of the political organism.

The session aims at asking about topicality of the Byzantine tradition in modern culture and examining the phenomenon of the revival (in XX cent.) of the Byzantine sacral art. In such circumstances does the issue of icon appear that for years has been appealing scholars in the Byzantine studies, researchers in the cultural studies, anthropologists, theologians as well as artists and cohorts of passionate non-professionals. The other part of the session is dedicated to the academic and literary legacy by Serguey Averintsev (1937-2004), one of the most intriguing humanists and researchers in the Byzantine tradition of XX cent.

The very topic of the session is machine, its concept, notion and role that it plays in the human culture.

03-08.03.2008Languages in contact - varieties, reflexes, traces; methodology of research

The present session closes the series of the meetings dedicated to the problem of the language contacts. The topics of the session:

1. Loanwords and onomastics as the testimony of the Proto-Slavic tribes' language contacts. The importance of the loanwords for setting the chronology of the contacts and of the language changes;
2. The Balkan Sprachbund as a result of language contacts;
3. The language contacts of ethnic minorities > bilingualism > code change with traces of substrate idiom (Polish Kresy (Borderland) slangs and resettles' idiom case example).

Session devoted to problems of ethnic, cultural and linguistic identity of small nations and ethnic groups in contemporary Europe based on the Kashubian example. It also stressed problems of the environment was the beginning of the study of the Tartars in MSH - the majority of the participants belonged to the Crimean Tartars.
